![]() ![]() Until (or unless) it does, Sherwood is the favorite to be the third starter at linebacker, though the Jets don’t play three linebackers at the same time all that much. The Jets could still bring back Kwon Alexander, but if making that move was a priority, it would’ve happened already. Others: Hamsah Nasirildeen, Chazz Surratt, Claudin Cherelus (R), Maalik Hall (R), Caleb Johnson (R) Huff is one of the best situational pass rushers in the NFL, too, and Clemons bulked up to 290 pounds, which should allow him to help more at defensive tackle as well. Lawson looks ready to take off, Franklin-Myers remains solid - and should get more reps at tackle this year - and the Jets have used first-round picks in back-to-back years (Jermaine Johnson, Will McDonald) on athletic pass rushers who should play major roles this season. In terms of depth, this might be the best position group on the Jets’ roster. Of the group listed, Colon and Cajuste would have the best shot of making the team - or maybe Pankey, who can play guard and tackle. The question will be whether Douglas wants to keep more offensive linemen than that, especially after the bad luck they experienced injury-wise last year. These 10 linemen feel like safe bets to make the team. Others: Trystan Colon, Yodny Cajuste, Adam Pankey, Chris Glaser, Brent Laing, Greg Senat Yeboah brings value on special teams, so he’ll fight for one of the last roster spots, too. He’s a project, and one worth developing, but depending on how he performs in the preseason, the Jets might be able to sneak him through to the practice squad. The Jets drafted Kuntz in the seventh round, and he has the physical and athletic attributes to be a highly intriguing player, but he also didn’t show enough in college (in between injuries) for anyone to draft him before the seventh round. Gipson, Kapp and Luther will be rookies to watch in training camp, and Charles is well liked by the coaching staff. Brownlee was a standout in OTAs, got the biggest guarantee of all the UDFAs ($246,000) and played some special teams in college, getting 47 snaps on the coverage units last year at Southern Miss. Some fans might be mad if Mims gets traded or cut, but this is going to be his hardest path to the roster, and even if he makes the 53, it’s difficult to envision him being active on Sundays since he doesn’t contribute on special teams and isn’t particularly versatile positionally. If everyone is healthy, this is an extremely deep group of quality wide receivers. Others: Denzel Mims, Xavier Gipson (R), TJ Luther (R), Irv Charles, Diontae Spencer, Malik Taylor, Jerome Kapp (R) Should the Jets sign Dalvin Cook? Pros, cons and how the RB would fit Wide receivers (6) Abanikanda adds an interesting wrinkle into the group as an explosive and shifty runner who could play quickly. They’re better served in rotations than as lead backs. Carter struggled after Hall went down last year - 3.6 yards per carry, an ill-timed fumble against the Bills - and Knight cooled off after a fast start. (Ed Mulholland / USA Today) Running backs (4)ĭalvin Cook is certainly still a possibility here - or maybe someone like Kareem Hunt, too, if he lingers as a free agent into training camp - but I’m skeptical that Douglas would shell out much money for another running back at this stage … unless Hall isn’t ready to start the season.Īs for the rest of the group, the Jets sound confident that Hall will be back in Week 1, but how much of a workload he can take on will be a question going into the season. Zonovan Knight ran for 300 yards and a TD and also caught 13 passes for 100 yards with the Jets. It’s fair to be skeptical that Wilson can handle the pressure of leading a team with designs on winning a Super Bowl, but the Jets are in trouble if Rodgers gets hurt no matter who the backup is. The Jets liked what they saw out of Wilson in OTAs and feel confident this new environment he’s working in - with Rodgers, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and passing game coordinator Todd Downing - will pay dividends. At this stage, I’d be surprised if that happens. I know some fans would like the Jets to bring in someone like Teddy Bridgewater or Nick Foles to create a more stable backup situation in the event Rodgers gets injured. (Note: “R” stands for rookie) Quarterbacks (3) Obviously, a lot will change once we see these players practicing in camp and playing in preseason games. So while we wait for the start of training camp, this felt like a good time to look ahead and give my first 53-man roster projection of the season. ![]()
